After reading two short stories in LITFILI, now it's time to go back analyze each stories. this short stories were written by famous authors, while we read the stories we have seen some filipino traits in each of the short stories.
First was "My father goes to court" in this story we have seen a typical filipino trait that whatever problem comes to a filipino, he/she just smile or laugh at their problem, even if the problem is so bad some of us just don't mind it very much. Another thing is some of filipino people have this kind of trait which is called "pilosopo", they sometimes joke on peoples quote or saying, maybe because they don't know it or just pretending that they know it.
Second is "How my brother Leon brought home a wife", in this story i have seen one trait that filipino people is sometimes paranoid, because in this story the father of leon tested her wife maria if she could adapt the environment in the province, because they think manila girls are so vain and not use to the environment of the province, but the father was wrong of his thoughts about the girl.
so now my question is, why some of the filipinos have this negative traits, well some of the traits that was seen on the two short stories is still existing now a days and its getting a lot more. like the time, some of us comes after an hour. example is the agenda is 9am but people will come by 10am, it's always one hour late. another is filipino students like me, even if we have tons of work to do, it's like that we don't worry much about it, we usually like to cram always, and sometimes when cramming that's the time that i could think clearly.

My father goes to court is one of the best type of story to describe a typical filipino traits, we filipino stay happy to cope our problems.
We usually laugh, have fun go somewhere, sing and anything just to forget their problems. FILIPINO always smile (though they dont have any enough money to buy their foods or etc..)
"How my brother Leon brought home a wife", is a one type of tradition from the province.. Which they have this "panunuyO" or "pamamanhikan". yeah, its another trait of the filipinos. But in some way the author exaggerate or give a twist.
I remember another tradition na guys should court the whole family by cutting a woods, helping the father of the girl to do house work etc. Funny but sweet=)

hmm. while i dont blame you for labeling the father's attitude paranoia, i think it goes deeper than than. filipinos just give so much regard the family network (in laws, etc.) and we want to make sure that everyone could get along or at least adapt over time to the "general culture." perhaps maria's "welcome" ride home is not an "initiation" but rather a trailer or foretaste of what is to come if she decides to stand by leon.
an alternative reading could be that at the end of the story, it is maria who decides "yes, i accept you people. i decide to stay." :)
